Collections

The Carmel Clay Historical Society maintains collections of public records; probate records; manuscripts; photographs; maps; burials for all cemeteries in Clay Township; church records; school records for all schools in Clay Township’s history, including one-room schools.

The histories of Carmel in our collection include Reminiscences of the Long Ago by Zina Warren, The Heritage of Carmel by Phil Hinshaw, and Carmel: A Second Discovery by Dorothy Smith. Those pertaining to Hamilton County are the History of Hamilton County by A. F. Shirts, Primitive History of Hamilton County by Augustus Finch Shirts, the Portrait and biographical record of Madison and Hamilton counties, Indiana, and the The History of Hamilton County, Indiana written by John F. Haines.

The society has no city directories for Carmel. However, we do have phone books from the following years: 1956, 1957, 1958, 1960, 1961, 1973, 1974, and 1981. In addition, we have community directories published by the Carmel Chamber of Commerce for the years 1984-85 , 1989-90. 1993-94, 1995-97, and 1998.

A variety of items relating to Carmel High School are on our shelves as well. This includes Carmel High School yearbooks from 1901 to the present, Carmel Greyhound athletic programs, composite photographs, and other memorabilia.
