Old Town Tours

    • Special walking tours of Old Town are offered to groups for a small fee, including class reunions and families. The 45-minute tour will take visitors through the streets of Old Town where guides will show historic photographs of locations, comparing what was there with what is there today. Contact CCHS at 317-846-7117 to schedule a tour.

School Tours

School groups can visit the Monon Depot Museum for field trips. Students are broken up into groups of approximately 35. The groups alternate between a talk about Carmel history and hands-on activities in the Monon Depot Museum, and a walk down the Monon to envision the area as a once-bustling railroad corridor and through Old Town, where they will compare the structures standing today to photographs of those that once populated the town. CCHS volunteers guide students and chaperones through Old Town.

School visits to the Monon Depot Museum meet curriculum requirements in social studies, math, language arts, and science. Cost of school tours is $3 per child and includes a pre- or post-tour visit to the school by one of our volunteers, who will bring hands-on components to the classroom to reinforce material presented during the visit. Adults/chaperones are free.

Self-Guiding Tour of Carmel

This self-guided driving tour blends the new and the old, the vibrant suburban core with the small-town farming community. By clicking on a site on the map in the app, you will be able to read or listen to the history of that location and see it in a historic photograph. In some cases, you will have the fascinating opportunity to compare a historic photo and current photo side-by-side, using a slider to watch the image change centuries before your eyes.

This self-guiding, interactive driving tour was developed by a partnership between Ball State University and the Carmel Clay Historical Society. It was made possible with support from the City of Carmel and Hamilton County Tourism.
